Zhongshan Huaye: A Solvent Inks Case Study for Eco-Friendly Innovation
Ecological issues with traditional methods
"The batch of Solvents is failing another round of testing!” Quality Control Manager Chen exclaimed on entry to the meeting. “The client is saying VOCs are too high by half a percent.” This came as no surprise to Huaye, as this was the third occurrence of the same issue. Chief Engineer Li only responded with, “We are running out of time—there’s only so much time we can allow ourselves when the bar keeps moving.”
Master Wang was holding a mini class explaining to his apprentices how, “The Solvent Inks formula we have been using is ancient, outdated, and reliable for a reason.” Things worsened when Marketing Specialist Zhang reported, “The news isn’t good either. Two more competitors were slapped with multi-million dollar fines for non-environmental compliance.”

At this critical point, Zhongshan Huaye took a dual strategy: importing advanced solvent recovery equipment from Germany while partnering with local universities to formulate new eco-friendly solvents. The entire team had collective sighs of relief when the first batch of reformulated Solvent Inks and passed SGS certification three months later.
The most notable came from a Shenzhen label printing factory. The plant manager was reluctant to believe the new formulation, “It’s 15% more expensive—why should I change?” The sales manager brought him to the workshop for live testing: “Look—the new Solvent Inks reduces drying time by 20% and lowers overall energy consumption. You’ll recoup the cost difference in three months.” Factory voluntarily placed additional orders six months later.
Continuous Innovations for Tomorrow
One of the most impressive parts of Zhongshan Huaye's manufacturing plant to visitors is their multi-million dollar solvent save back system. Operator Liu explains how, "This system achieves 95% solvent recovery during Solvent Inks production, saving over 2 million yuan annually in raw material costs."
As always, new challenges arise. Last month, the EU unexpectedly revised REACH regulations which added more restrictive limits on some additives used in Solvent Inks. To everyone’s amazement, Zhongshan Huaye made formula modifications in two weeks. Engineer Li rationalized: "We've long established a global environmental regulation monitoring system—this change was actually anticipated."
Master Wang’s comments at a recent symposium left quite an impression when he said: "For more than thirty years working with Solvent Inks, I've never had to learn so much new knowledge. But seeing our products become more eco-friendly and our workers' environment improved, all this change is worth it." This is sentiment shared by many other industry leaders, which explains why Master Wang’s speech was so gladly received.
